Participation of Viviane Reding in the debate on the Future of Europe, in Sofia: press conference
On 23 July 2013, Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, participated in the debate on the Future of Europe, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Calls for a strong democracy and an independent justice system at national level were at the centre of this Citizens' Dialogue. "Democracy needs to overcome corruption, oligarchic structures and despair. It needs fairness, free media and an effective justice system. The European Commission is ready to lend a helping hand but the reforms need to be done by your government" Viviane Reding said.
The Sofia Citizens' Dialogue is part of a series of some 50 debates that the European Commission is holding in all EU Member States and that involve practically all Commissioners, as well as national and local politicians and members of the European Parliament.
