Appeal of the Court of Justice of the EU in the joined cases P UEFA v Commission (C-201/11), P FIFA v Commission (C-204/11), and P FIFA v Commission (C-205/11) on Freedom of movement for persons
On 18 July 2013, the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled in joined case C-201/11 P, C-204/11 P and C-205/11 P UEFA and FIFA v Commission.
In its ruling, the Court dismissed the appeal brought by FIFA and UEFA against the judgments of the General Court on television broadcasts of the World Cup and the EURO.
The European directive concerning the pursuit of television broadcasting activities authorises the EU Member States to prohibit the exclusive broadcasting of events which they deem to be of major importance for society, where such broadcasts would deprive a substantial proportion of the public of the possibility of following those events on free television.
