Participation of Kristalina Georgieva in a civil protection exercise in Austria
On 28 June 2013, Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, was in Salzburg where she took part in an EU co-financed disaster exercise focusing on landslides - a major risk in Austria.
Nearly a thousand rescue workers were involved in the simulated disaster, called "EU Taranis 2013". More than half were from Austria's national organisations, with expertise in fire-fighting and water, cave and mountain rescue. Teams were provided by Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Netherlands, Romania and the Czech Republic.
The scenario for the exercise was that long-lasting massive rainfalls in the western parts of Austria, especially in the Province of Salzburg, led to regional floods, landslides, mudslides, rock-falls, combining with an extreme flood caused by mountain melt-water. SHOTLIST
