G8 Summit, Northern Ireland, 17-18/06/2013

The 39th G8 Summit was held on 17 and 18 June 2013 at the Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, under British Presidency. The European Union was represented by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council. The G8 Heads of State or Government were: David Cameron, British Prime Minister, Angela Merkel, German Federal Chancellor, François Hollande, President of the French Republic, Enrico Letta, Italian Prime Minister, Barack Obama, President of the United States, Stephen Harper, Canadian Prime Minister, Shinzō Abe, Japanese Prime Minister, and Vladimir Putin, President of Russia. They had a good discussion of the global economy. All leaders agreed that the urgent priority is to promote growth and jobs, particularly for the young and long-term unemployed. While recognising that the economic situation had improved since the last G8 Summit in May 2012, they all agreed on the need to continue supporting the global recovery by supporting demand, ensuring healthy public finances and implementing structural reforms. The G8 discussion of foreign policy focused in-depth on the appalling crisis in Syria. The EU leaders stressed the need to press for a political solution via convening a Geneva II conference as soon as possible and simultaneously address the gravely escalating humanitarian crisis that also threatens regional stability as a matter of urgency. All G8 leaders seized and reinforced the momentum in the global fight against tax evasion and tax fraud. The G8 made a strong call for increased transparency. Furthermore, in the margins of the Summit, José Manuel Barroso and Herman van Rompuy, together with Barack Obama, launched the historic negotiations for an unprecedented Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the European Union and the United States. Still in the margins of the Summit, José Manuel Barroso and Herman van Rompuy had the opportunity to hold a trilateral meeting with Shinzō Abe to discuss the relations between the EU and Japan.
