Foreign Affairs Council, 3241st meeting: extracts from the doorsteps and arrivals
The 3241st meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council was held on 27 May 2013 in Brussels.
The crisis in Syria and whether to lift the EU arms embargo against Syria dominated the meeting chaired by Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC. The Ministers discussed the latest developments with respect to the Syrian crisis and repeated the EU's call for the end of all violence. Ministers also reiterated the urgent need for a political solution of the conflict and welcomed the joint US/Russia call for a peace conference on Syria to promote a political process based on the principles included in the Geneva communiqué of 30 June 2012. They pledged that the EU will spare no effort in helping to create the appropriate conditions for a successful convening of this conference. The Foreign Affairs Council also agreed elements on the renewal of EU sanctions against Syria: It agreed to adopt restrictive measures in a number of areas at the expiry of the current sanctions regime. At the same time, it took note of commitments by Member States concerning the possible export of arms to Syria. SHOTLISTLINK
