Preparation of the European Council of 22/05/2013, EP plenary session with the participation of José Manuel Barroso

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the EP plenary session which focused on the preparation of the European Council of 22/05/2013. In his speech the President stressed energy and the fight against tax fraud and tax evasion as the two main topics of this European Council. He highlighted that those two matter for the public finances, for the competitiveness of the businesses and for the cost of living of the citizens. José Manuel Barroso added that progress on both energy and taxation was crucial to show that, at European level and in Member States, political leaders were willing and able to mobilise every growth lever they had at hand and to give any impetus they possibly could to help citizens and businesses through very difficult times. A stronger European energy policy was a particularly important tool to achieve this. Tax fraud and tax evasion were equally important, he highlighted, not just for their economic impact but for the legitimacy of the provided efforts as well.
