Participation of Janez Potočnik in the debate on the Future of Europe, in Pise
On 5 April 2013, Janez Potočnik, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, was in Pisa, Italy, to participate in a debate with citizens on the Future of Europe.
Green growth and environmental policy making were high on the agenda at the debate. Many in the audience called for 'more Europe' to protect the environment, and asked for EU support in addressing environmental issues at municipality and regional level. Janez Potočnik invited Europeans to make their voices heard via social media. Many used Twitter to put questions to the Commissioner on specific environmental questions during the debate. Many were interested in how the EU plans to reconcile economic growth with protecting the environment. Janez Potočnik said that green growth is necessary to maintain our quality of life. He also called for a 'circular economy'. The event concluded with questions on whether the EU's political structures should be further developed to meet the challenges of a globalised world. Janez Potočnik spoke of his belief that the future would bring more global responsibility for the EU.
The debate was organised in the framework of the 2013 European Year of Citizens.
