Visit of a delegation from the Lithuanian government to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and the College of the EC hosted a delegation from the Lithuanian Government led by Algirdas Butkevičius, Lithuanian Prime Minister. This meeting took place ahead of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU to be held in July 2013. Lithuania would be at the helm of the Council of the EU in the last six months before the EP elections in 2014. In light of this, José Manuel Barroso insisted that it was important to conclude the fundamental legislative processes during this Presidency. These included implementation of the Compact for Growth and Jobs, construction of the Banking Union and the 2014 objective of fully completing the EU internal energy market. He added that good cooperation of the Council with the EP would be essential and that, as always, the EC would be there to help. The President also referred to the Eastern Partnership. He then congratulated Algirdas Butkevičius for Lithuania's intention to join the euro area in 2015, adding that fiscal consolidation and structural reforms would help the country in achieving sustainable convergence and in joining the euro.
