Visit of Sebastián Piñera Echenique, President of Chile, to José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, received Sebastián Piñera Echenique, President of Chile. They notably discussed the next EU/Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) Summit devoted to "Quality investment" to be held in Chile on 26-27/01/2013.
During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso highlighted that the country was one of the closest partners of the EU in Latin America, referring to the EU/Chile Association Agreement signed in 2002, thus celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012. This agreement played a significant role in deepening mutual relations, especially in trade – since 2003, bilateral trade grew by 230% reaching a high of €18 billion in 2011.
The President added that there were many areas that could profit from yet deeper cooperation between the EU and Chile. Both leaders also decided to cooperate more closely to promote new technologies.
