Outcomes of the European Council of 28-29/06/2012, EP plenary session with the participation of José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the EP plenary session which focused on the outcomes of the European Council of Brussels of 28-29/06/2012. Firstly the President thanked Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Danish Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, and Denmark at the end of their Presidency of the Council of the EU.
He secondly highlighted that this European Council and the Eurozone Summit had for the first time tackled all the elements of a comprehensive response in one at the same meeting. He recalled that consolidation and sustainable growth went hand in hand and that it was therefore important that a Compact for Growth and Jobs was agreed, mainly based on proposals by the EC.
The President then referred to the endorsement of the Commission's country-specific recommendations. He also sketched out the need to urgently embark on the path towards a banking, fiscal, economic and political Union. José Manuel Barroso finally praised the important outcomes of the European Council and Eurozone Summit on short-term measures to support countries under market pressure.
