5th European Summit of Regions and Cities with the participation of José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, went to Copenhagen where he participated in the 5th European Summit of Regions and Cities. The discussions focused on the key role of European urban areas in contributing to EU's growth and jobs agenda, as well as the vital importance of economic, social and territorial cohesion for the future of Europe.
In his speech, José Manuel Barroso recalled that the EC's proposal for a modernized cohesion policy set out an ambitious urban agenda articulated around three main principles, namely sustainability, innovation and partnership.
The President then elaborated on these three main principles, giving concrete examples of proposed measures, such as 5% minimum ring-fencing for the purpose of integrated sustainable urban development and €400 million set aside for urban innovative actions.
He concluded with a strong appeal saying that it was critically important that the leaders of the cities, the leaders of the local authorities in Europe, took a stronger role in the debate in defence of Europe.
