Control Week with the participation of Maria Damanaki

Maria Damanaki, Member of the EC in charge of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, delivered a message to the European citizens on the new rules to stop illegal fishing. The EU "zero tolerance" campaign against illegal fishing thus get tougher. Getting away with fishing illegally became much more difficult for fishermen, as the EU's system for fisheries control was fully operational. With the adoption of detailed rules on how to carry out controls throughout the market chain "from net to plate", the EU had the means to break with the past and establish a real culture of compliance to stop overfishing and help make EU fisheries truly sustainable.
