On 14/01/2010, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC gave a statement on the EU coordinated efforts in Haiti following the devastating earthquake on 12 January. She gave an update on contacts she had with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Teams from the French Antilles started search and rescue operations. Additional search and rescue teams from Belgium, Luxembourg, France, the UK and Iceland arrived in the course of 14/01/2010.Catherine Ashton said: 'We are working closely together on humanitarian relief side with the member States. An number of member sates and particularly Belgium, France and Spain but many other too, have sent teams and materials, such as water purification, field hospitals and tents. The first team have arrived and are active in the search and rescue operations.The European Commission has moved quickly to help the victims of the earthquake which struck Haiti by adopting a fast-track "primary emergency" decision of €3 million for immediate relief activities. The Commission's relief experts have arrived in Haiti to strengthen the EU's response capabilities on the ground. In addition, the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated, with its Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) coordinating the activities.
