Informal Meeting of Ministers for Economy and Finance: group photo and round table
An informal meeting of the EU Ministers for Economy and Finance and the Governors of the Central Banks of the EU Member States took place in Prague on 3 and 4 April 2009.
The meeting was chaired by Miroslav Kalousek, Czech Minister for Finance and President in office of the Council, and was also attended by Joaquín Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, and Charlie McCreevy, Member of the EC in charge of Internal Market and Services, Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank, and Phillipe Maystadt, President of the European Investment Bank. Miroslav Kalousek had also invited a number of other prominent guests, e.g. Jacques de Larosière, who is in charge of the High-Level Group on Financial Supervision, and Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, former Italian Minister for Finance and present President of the think-tank "Notre Europe".
The Ministers for Finance first negotiated issues concerning the implementation of the Stability and Growth Pact, notably proposals for the decision on the existence of an excessive budget deficit in certain Member States and recommendations for its correction.
The Ministers then, together with the Governors, assessed the current development on the financial markets as well as the overall economic situation and discussed the results of the G20 summit, taking place the day before the Prague meeting.
Another topic on the agenda was current issues concerning the International Monetary Fund. The debate was the first stage of preparing the EU contribution for the Spring Meeting of the IMF and the World Bank on 25-26 April 2009 in Washington. SHOTLIST
