Paris Summit for the Mediterranean: arrivals, round table, extracts from the opening speech
The Union for the Mediterranean project proposed by France was officially launched on 13 July 2008 at the Paris Summit for the Mediterranean. The Summit of 13 July, to which the Heads of State or Government of all the countries bordering on the Mediterranean and of the countries of the European Union were invited, gave a political impetus at the highest level.
The Union for the Mediterranean is an initiative which gives a new drive, both to the neighbourhood policy and to the Barcelona Process, and which renews their dynamism and scope, while underpinning Mediterranean cooperation with a dialogue based on respect for equality between parties. The objective is a union of equal partners and a union of projects which will endeavour to respond to peoples' needs and their most urgent concerns, such as guaranteed access to water, the preservation of the Mediterranean, cooperation in terms of response to natural disasters (forest fires, earthquakes, floods), and the creation of jobs.
