To celebrate 50 Years of Food Safety in the EU, the European Commission organised a visit to the livestock market in Ciney (South of Belgium) and to the AWE (Walloon Association of the Breeding) insemination centre which specialises in the collection, processing and storage of semen from the famous "Blanc Bleu Belge" breed of cattle.
The Ciney market is the third largest livestock market in Europe and a model example of how EU animal health and welfare rules apply in practice. Following serious animal welfare problems in the 1980s, the Commission intervened and much effort was made to bring the market into compliance with EU legislation.
To illustrate this, the European Commission's audiovisual service has produced an infoclip which will cover:
- Ciney Livestock Market, Belgium;
- Insemination Centre of the AWE, Ciney. SHOTLIST
