Maritime Security - 2006

“Ile de Brehat” is one of the vessels engaged by EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency) to tackle oil pollution accidents. Every three months a drill is organised to test both the equipment and the facilities and to ensure the crew are ready to tackle any emergencies. The vessel is based in Brest, France and covers the English Channel and the Atlantic coastline area, but in case of an accident, could be deployed in other areas of the European Union. The “Ile de Bréhat” can be ready for action within 12 hours and has an onboard recovered oil storage capacity of 4,000 cubic meters. The EMSA fleet includes 7 vessels (5 in the Baltic Sea, 1 in the Atlantic Ocean and 1 in the Mediterranean) which are ready to tackle emergencies, and the fleet is still growing. This network was created in the wake of the recent “Erika” and “Prestige” oil tanker accidents.
