The dreadful air accidents in 2005 are still fresh in people's minds. Should we be afraid of flying? Clearly not.
Air transport remains the safest way to travel. It is the end product of an extremely strict security screening chain involving all players in the aeronautical community: manufacturers, the European Aviation Safety Agency, aeronautical administrations, air carriers, etc.
Some fear, however, that the mechanical effect of an increase in traffic and the amount of air carriers might be an increase in the number of accidents.
For the European Commission, statistics do not determine fate. European certification of aircraft, harmonisation of pilot and cabin crew training, founding of the European Aviation Safety Agency, creation of the Single European Sky, preparation of a blacklist of unsafe companies: this video shows, from the design of an aircraft to its use, how the many initiatives taken by the European Union continue to make European airspace safer, despite an increase in traffic.
