VNR: Recycling electronic and electric waste in Europe: a duty
Throughout the European Union millions of electric and electronic equipment are thrown out each year. Regrettably, many of these refrigerators, washing machines, computers, TVs and mobile telephones find their way into landfills or are incinerated. The heavy metals and other toxic substances they contain ultimately seep into the soil and ground water or released into the air. To reduce dangerous substances from being released into the environment the European Commission has adopted two directives which aim to increase the amount of electric and electronic equipment being recycled and to restrict the toxic substances found in these products. These directives must now be transposed into national law in all 25 Member States.
