VNR: Navarre: Renewable energy - the mainspring of regional development
Three stories in pictures illustrate the development of renewable energy in Europe: at local level (Island of Föhr, in northern Germany), at regional level (Navarre, in Spain) and at national level (Sweden).
The inhabitants of the Island of Föhr, in northern Germany, want to generate their own energy based on thermal solar and biomass power. The regional government of Navarre, in Spain, wants 100% renewable electricity by 2005, mainly relying on wind power. In Sweden, the government is working on a range of tax incentives to encourage more widespread use of biomass… These three stories in pictures illustrate the development of renewable energy in Europe. Wind, thermal solar, photovoltaic solar, microhydrodynamic, wood energy, geothermal and biomass are technologies with a promising future ahead of them. The Member States of the European Union have undertaken to use them to generate 12% of their energy needs by 2010.
