VNR: The Protection of the Great Bustard in Extremadura
The great bustard is one of the bird species with significant populations in Extremadura. Its habitats are the stepped areas, i.e. open treeless landscapes used as extensive pasture or for the cultivation of cereals. A considerable proportion of the land in Extremadura consists of this type of habitat, notably the Llanos de Cáceres, Cornalvo nature park and the Embalse de Orellana y Sierra de Pela. A European Commission LIFE project is undertaking measures to protect the endangered species.
