EC/Lebanon Cooperation Council, 2nd meeting: extracts from the meeting and from the press conference

On 6 March 1995, EC/Lebanon Cooperation Council held their second meeting, in Brussels; fifteen years after the first session. The meeting was chaired by Alain Juppé, French Minister for Foreign Affairs and President in office of the Council. The Lebanese delegation was headed by Fares Boueiz, Lebanese Minister for Foreign Affairs. The European Commission was respresented by Manuel Marin, Vice-President of the EC in charge of External Relations with Southern Mediterranean Countries, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia (except Japan, China, South Korea, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) including Development Aid. Discussions focused on Euro-Lebanese relations and prospects for the negotiation of a new agreement, the development of the Lebanese economy, Lebanon and the Middle East peace process and preparations for the Euro-Mediterranean Conference in Barcelona. The Lebanese authorities expressed their desire for the swift negotiation of a new agreement similar to those which the Union is currently negotiating with several of its Mediterranean partners in the context of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. On the political front, the EU had repeatedly said that it recognized the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon.
