Biotechnology conference

On 11 January 1996, a conference on biotechnology took place, at the Borschette Centre, in Brussels. This one was organised by the European Commission and the European Parliament. As the 1993 White paper of Growth, Competitiveness and Employment noted, biotechnology was one of the most promising and crucial technologies. The sectors where biotechnology had a direct impact accounted for 9% of the Community's gross value added and 8% of its employment. The key sectors where biotechnology had an impact were: biopharmaceuticals; agriculture and food processing, notably crops and micro-organisms; biofuels; bioremediation; and chemicals. The conference outlined the situation and challenge for the EU, future and action under way at EC level. This best-of contains extracts from the speeches of Martin Bangemann, Member of the EC in charge of Industrial Affairs, Information and Telecommunications Technologies; Mario Monti, Member of the EC in charge of Internal Market, Financial Services and Financial Integration, Customs and Taxation; Franz Fischler, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development; and Ritt Bjerregaard, Member of the EC in charge of Environment and Nuclear Safety; as well as from Members of the EP.
