On 28 May 1979, the signing ceremony of the accession Treaty of Greece to the European Communities took place in the Zappeion of Athens. Greece will officially join the European Communities on 1 January 1981 and will become the tenth member of the Common Market. This signature ceremony was chaired by the French delegation which included Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, President of the French Republic and President in office of the Council, Jean-Francois Poncet, French Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Luc de La Barre de Nanteuil, French Permanent Representative to the EC. The Greek delegation was headed by Konstantinos G. Karamanlis, Greek Prime Minister. European Communities were represented Roy Jenkins, President of the CEC, and Lorenzo Natali, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of Enlargement, Protection of the environment, Nuclear Safety and Relations with the Parliament.This video shows extracts of the signature ceremony and general atmosphere in the streets of Athens.
