European Council of Copenhagen, , 21-22/06/1993

The Heads of State and Government of the Member States met on the occasion of the Copenhagen European Council under the presidency of Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Danish Prime Minister. Unemployment and the economic recession made up the main part of the debates. A White Paper will have to be proposed at the next European Council on a long-term strategy for growth, competitiveness and employment. The European Council sent a political message to the Central and Eastern European countries wishing to become members of the EC as soon as they meet the economic and political conditions which result from this. It also agreed on the necessity of suitable support for Albania, and on the implementation of free trade agreements with the Baltic States. The Council encouraged the negotiators of the International Conference to continue their efforts to find a solution for the three populations of Bosnia-Herzegovina. The council reaffirmed the need to strengthen cooperation and the development of relations with Turkey. It also approved the negotiation directives for a partnership agreement with Morocco as well as with Tunisia.
