European Council, in Brussels 12-13/07/1976: pro-European demonstration in front of the EEC buildings

The Heads of State or Government met in Brussels on 12-13/07/1976 for a meeting of the European Council. The Council gave its agreement on the following distribution and number of seats for the European Parliament which will be elected in 1978 by direct universal suffrage: Luxembourg 6; Ireland 15; Denmark 16; Belgium 24; The Netherlands 25; France 81; Italy 81; United Kingdom 81; Germany; 81. Within the European Council, a broad agreement emerged with respect to the appreciation of the economic situation. It was characterised by a general improvement of circumstances. The Council is convinced that this recovery will continue in 1977. However, relatively high unemployment rates should still be expected for a fairly long period of time. The progression of these rates will continue to be monitored particularly closely in certain Member States.
