Strasbourg European Council

On 8 and 9 December 1989, Heads of State or Government, and EU Ministers for Foreign Affairs, gathered, at the Palais des Congrès, in Strasbourg. Jacques Delors, President of the EC, and Frans Andriessen, Vice-President of the CEC in charge of External Relations and Trade Policy and Cooperation with other European Countrie; also attended the European Council. The Council was chaired by François Mitterrand, président de la République française. Main items on the agenda were the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and the European Social Charter with the social rights of the workers. The European Council also reaffirmed the Community's willingness to encourage, by all means at its disposal, economic reforms in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and to continue the examination of appropriate forms of association with those of them who are on the look of economic and political reform. The Council also approved an important statement on this subject under European Political Cooperation. This video contains views of the arrivals, the round table and the group photo. The Council meeting was followed by a press conference given by François Mitterrand to present the conclusions of this Council.
