On 9 December 2012, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, Martin Schulz, President of the EP, and Thorbjørn Jagland, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, gave a press conference on the Nobel Peace Prize 2012, in Oslo. The European Union received the 2012 award for advancing the causes of peace, reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. In its announcement on 12 October 2012, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said its decision was based on the stabilising role the EU has played in transforming most of Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.
