Visite of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia, to Andris Piebalgs: round table and statements
On 8 November 2012, Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, received Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia. They held a joint press briefing after their meeting.
Andris Piebalgs announced new EU funding worth 42 million euro that will contribute to halving maternal mortality rate to 375 per 100,000 live births from the current level of 770 per 100,000 (one of the highest in the world). These funds will be used for rehabilitating health centres, providing medical equipment, training health staff and many other activities aimed at improving health services in the country. This EU funding is part of the EU's 1 billion euro MDG initiative to foster global progress on the Millennium Development Goals before 2015.
During their meeting Andris Piebalgs and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf also discussed the EU's development work and political dialogue with Liberia as well as regional cooperation in West Africa more widely and progress towards meeting the Millennium Development Goals. SHOTLIST
