Extracts from the press conference by Günther Oettinger on Biofuels scheme certification
On 19/07/2011, Günther Oettinger, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, gave a press conference on Biofuels scheme certification. The first EU sustainability schemes for biofuels got the go-ahead. Biofuels could represent an environmentally-friendly replacement of fossil fuels. However, they needed to make sure that tropical forests and carbon rich peatlands were not turned into oil palm or sugarcane plantations. They also had to guarantee that compared to fossil fuels biofuels used in the EU delivered tangible greenhouse gas savings. To this end, the sustainability of biofuels needed to be checked by Member States or through voluntary schemes which had been approved by the European Commission. Today the Commission recognised seven such voluntary schemes: ISCC, Bonsucro EU, RTRS EU RED, RSB EU RED, 2BSvs, RSBA, and Greenergy. This recognition applied directly in 27 EU Member States.
