EPP Group Study Days conference, Palermo, 06/05/2011: extracts from the press conference by José Manuel Barroso

The EPP Group Study Days conference took place in Palermo (Italy) on 4-6 May 2011 under the title "Rebuilding a strong partnership in the Mediterranean". Panels of discussion included the crisis in the Arab world and North Africa, migration and dialogue in the Mediterranean, fight against organised crime and drug trafficking, agriculture and fisheries in the Mediterranean, and the environment in the Mediterranean. During the press conference after the meeting, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, said that the European Union might not take migratory pressure as an excuse to roll back its achievements of border-free travelling inside the European Union. He explained that the Commission would not abandon Schengen because was one of the biggest achievements of the Union in terms of freedom and security.
