On 05/04/2011 during the plenary session in Strasbourg, Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, presented the conclusions of the latest European Council meeting of March 24th and 25th 2011.
On the economic governance, the package of six legislative proposals on economic governance was key to ensuring enhanced fiscal discipline and avoiding excessive macroeconomic imbalances. On international affairs, the European Council adopted the UN Security Council Resolution of 1973 regarding Libya , which expressed the principle of responsibility to protect civilians under threat of attack, and has stepped up to continue its planning on support for humanitarian assistance.
The European Council also expressed its concerns on the situations in Libya, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain, and Tunisia, and on the nuclear safety.
