Statement by Cecilia Malmström following her visit to Tunisia, EC Midday press briefing
On 1 April 2011 in Brussels, Cecilia Malmström, Member of the EC in charge of Home Affairs, gave a statement during the EC Midday press briefing following her visit to Tunisia. She said that the European Union and the Member States had made huge efforts to assist with the humanitarian needs and also to repatriate over 100.000 third country nationals to their own country.
She also announced that she was negotiating with the Member States the possibility to resettle people who could be returned to their home countries because they were refugees and in need of international protection.
And in relation with the problem of immigrants arriving to the Italian island of Lampedusa, she stated that there was a willingness of the Tunisian counter partners to cooperate and to find a constructive solution to this including a well managed organised and gradual repatriation of Tunisian nationals. And she added that the European Commission was ready to support the Italian authorities in finding a solution to this.
