Extracts from the statement by José Manuel Barroso on the situation in North Africa
On 2 March 2011 in Brussels, in his statement on the situation in North Africa, José Manuel Barroso, demanded Muammar al-Gaddafi, Guide of the Great Revolution of Libya, to quit the country.
He added that Europe will rise to this challenge and support the current transformation processes in the region. The Commission had a crucial set of political and economic tools that were already being deployed and will be further strengthened. Responding to the appeal of António Guterres, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the EU Commission strengthened its support to the refugees in North Africa. Manuel Barroso announced that EU Commission immediately increased its initial aid of 3 million euro to 10 million euro in order to provide medical, food aid and shelter to the refugees at Egyptian and Tunisian borders. President Barroso sent also a clear message to the young Arabs that were now fighting for freedom and democracy.
