EU/Ukraine Summit: extracts from the common press conference of Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, José Manuel Barroso and Viktor Yanukovych, President of Ukraine
The 14th EU/Ukraine Summit took place in Brussels on 22 November 2010. The European Union was represented by Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. Ukraine was represented by Viktor Yanukovych, President of Ukraine. They gave a common press conference after the meeting.
The Summit provided the leaders with the opportunity to discuss EU/Ukraine relations including progress in the negotiations of the EU/Ukraine Association Agreement, the reform agenda covering political and economic reforms and cooperation in areas such as energy, and transport.
The European Union called on Ukraine to give renewed impetus to reform efforts, in particular as regards the consolidation of human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law. They urged Ukraine to make further progress in improving the business and investment climate particularly by tackling corruption and removing red-tape, and to review progress in the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Energy Cooperation as well as the modernisation of Ukraine's gas transit system.
