Statement by José Manuel Barroso on the financial situation in Ireland
On 17 November 2010, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, made a statement on the financial situation in Ireland.
He said that the Commission is not putting pressure on Dublin to resort to the financial system's mechanism, but reiterated that the European Union mechanism is available and ready to be used if requested. He said that he is fully confident that the four year fiscal plan of the Irish government to be presented soon will prove that the 2014 target date for correcting the excessive debt is firm and credible. But he added that Ireland is addressing a very specific problem as far as the banking sector is concerned and must act speedily and decisively to pave the way for full confidence to be restored.
