United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit: opening speech by José Manuel Barroso
On 21 September 2010, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, gave an opening speech at the occasion of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals Summit. A commitment made by world leaders to eradicate poverty, disease and hunger by 2015.
He explained that the European Union had always stood with countries in difficulty, because even in times of economic downturn, it had remained a reliable partner.
But he reminded that more had to be done. He reaffirmed Europe’s commitment to this challenge and announced that the EU was ready to offer to the most committed and needy countries an MDG initiative amounting to €1 billion to make progress on those goals.
