Informal Council of European Ministers for Industry: extracts from the joint press conference by Jean-Claude Marcourt, Deputy Prime Minister of the Walloon Government and Minister for the Economy, SMEs, Foreign Trade and New Technologies and President in office of the Council, and Antonio Tajani

On 15/07/2010, Jean-Claude Marcourt, Deputy Prime Minister of the Walloon Government and Minister for the Economy, SMEs, Foreign Trade and New Technologies, chaired the Informal Council of European Ministers for Industry in Louvain-La-Neuve, in the presence of Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Industry and Entrepreneurship. Questions were raised about the measures to be taken at European level, to support the transition to a green economy, facilitate access by SMEs to external markets, and develop new forms of cooperation between the different policy levels. EU Members States agreed that the transformation of European industry in the context of globalization, must be regarded as an opportunity and not a constraint. Particular attention needed to be paid to access to commodities and natural resources, which was one of the strengths of Europe’s international competitors. The Belgian Presidency had been given a mandate by the Council to reach an agreement with the European Parliament, on a flagship part for the Small Business Act, which was a directive on combating late payment in commercial transactions. Jean-Claude Marcourt and Antonio Tajani gave a joint press conference after the meeting.
