Extracts from the press conference by László Andor on a Green Paper on the future of pensions in Europe
On 07/07/2010, the European Commission had launched a Europe-wide public debate on how to ensure adequate, sustainable and safe pensions, and how the EU could best support the national efforts. Ageing populations in all Member States had put existing retirement systems under massive strain, and the financial and economic crisis had only increased this pressure. The consultation document, a Green paper, posed a series of questions inviting all interested parties to contribute views, opinions and ideas on confronting the pension challenge - one of the biggest facing Europe and most parts of the world today – and how the EU could contribute to the solutions.
László Andor, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, gave a press conference on this consultation paper.
This Green Paper was a joint initiative from Commissioners Andor, Barnier and Rehn, taking into account the respective portfolio responsibilities, including the social dimension of pensions, internal market rules and issues of sustainability. The consultation called for views and fresh ideas for possible future EU actions.
