Competitiveness Council, 3016th meeting: extracts from the joint press conference by Cristina Garmendia Mendizábal, Spanish Minister for Science and Innovation and President in office of the Council, and Máire Geoghegan-Quinn (Research)
On 26/05/2010, Cristina Garmendia Mendizábal, Spanish Minister for Science and Innovation, chaired the 3016th meeting of the Competitiveness Council, in Brussels.
The EU Ministers for Research exchanged views on the setting of national targets for investment in research and development, as planned in the strategy for the creation of jobs and growth ("Europe 2020 strategy"), with a view of the June 2010 European Council.
The Council also adopted conclusions on ways of creating an innovative Europe and on the simplification of research programmes.
As Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, Member of the EC in charge of Research, Innovation and Science, encouraged Member States which were already in leading positions to booster their R&D targets, in order to help taking Europe collectively to the 3% target.
