Economic and Financial Affairs Council, 3015th meeting: extracts from the common press conference by Elena Salgado Méndez, Spanish Minister for Economy and Finance and President in office of the Council, Michel Barnier and Olli Rehn
The EU Ministers for Finance met on 18/05/2010 in Brussels, in the margins of the 3015th meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (EcoFin).
They discussed new rules on financial services, and in particular the new directive on hedge funds and private equity, proposed by the European Commission, to enhance the transparency of those funds in the markets and hamper speculation.
On the agenda of the meeting, there were also the consolidation plans that Member States have agreed to put in place on the Euro zone Summit last week. In particular, the Ministers for Finance examined the measures announced by the two countries which are most exposed to the market after Greece: Spain and Portugal.
The Ministers discussed as well the proposal of the European Commission, after the Euro zone Summit last week, to enhance economic governance in the European Union, and to reform the Stability Pact.
Elena Salgado Méndez, Spanish Minister for Economy and Finance and President in office of the Council, Michel Barnier, Member of the EC in charge of Internal Market and Services, and Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, gave a common press conference after the meeting.
