3rd Civil Protection Forum, Towards a more resilient society: extracts from the speech by Stavros Dimas

Stavros Dimas Member of the EC in charge of Environment, launched on 25/11/2009 the third Civil Protection Forum in Brussels. More than 500 civil protection professionals gathered together for the two-day conference on how EU countries can develop their resilience to disasters. Three debates with speakers from the world of politics, business and research allowed a frank exchange of ideas on when and how to prepare for disaster, risk perception and self-sufficiency among citizens and what form a disaster management strategy in Europe should take. Speakers agreed that climate change was likely to increase the frequency and impact of natural disasters and Europe has to be prepared for this and other challenges such as terrorist threats, chemical incidents and other accidents. An exhibition involving international partners, training organisations and innovative technologies runs alongside the conference. Stavros Dimas visited the exhibition and tested an earthquake simulating platform. Håkan Jevrell, Swedish State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, and Margareta Wahlström, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, have also taken part of the debate.
