Eurogroup meeting: extracts from the joint press conference by Elena Salgado Méndez, Spanish Minister for Economy and Finance, and Joaquín Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs
The Finance Ministers of the Eurozone met on 09/11/2009 for their monthly talks on the economic and financial situation. They discussed the economic broadcast published earlier by the European Commission.
They also tackled public finances and unemployment, being the priorities of the EU for the years to come, including labour market policies facing the current global crisis.
At the final press conference, Joaquin Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, told journalists that the UK proposal for a global tax on financial transactions (so-called "Tobin tax") raised some curiosity among Member States. "We will need to adopt a global decision that will not create distortions in the capital flows and between the different market places", added Joachim Almunia.
