Justice and Home Affairs Council, 2979th meeting: extracts from the joint press conference by Jacques Barrot and Tobias Billström, Swedish Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy and President in office of the Council

Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the EC and Tobias Billström, Swedish Minister for Migration and Asylum Policy, and President in office of the Council, reacted on 30/11/2009 to the vote in Switzerland banning the construction of new minarets. Jacques Barrot said that the Commission did not have to take a position, as Switzerland is not a member of the European Union. He added that the decision had been taken following a democratic process. Minister Billström said that the Presidency considered that the result of the vote was a negative sign because the freedom of religion is a basic freedom no matter what do you believe or belong to. He added that it was better to decide on the basis of architectural criterias and make institutional bodies to take those decisions instead of taking a vote on it.
