Extracts from the EU Ministerial Conference "Towards Global EU Action Against Trafficking in Human Beings The Third EU Anti Trafficking Day" with the participation of Beatrice Ask, Jacques Barrot and William Lacy Swing
On 19 October 2009, opened the two-days conference: "Towards EU Global Action against Trafficking in Human Beings”. It addressed the development of EU efforts to combat trafficking in human beings, focusing on relations and cooperation with countries of origin for trafficking in human beings, and countries through which this trafficking passes.
The main objectives were to strengthen the EU policy and action against trafficking, to contribute to development of the EU’s partnerships with third countries, to collate best practices and concrete proposals for action against trafficking.
The conference was intended for relevant actors in the area, such as international organisations, EU institutions, Russia and neighbouring countries along the EU’s eastern border, the countries of the Western Balkans, the USA and Canada.
Beatrice Ask, Swedish Minister for Justice and President in office of the Council of the EU, Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Justice, Freedom and Security, and William Lacy Swing, Director General of International Organization for Migration (IOM), attended and made a speech at the conference.
