Informal meeting of the Agriculture Ministers: extracts from the arrival and the doorstep by Eskil Erlandsson, Swedish Minister for Agriculture and President in office of the Council
The EU Agriculture Ministers gathered in Brussels on 5 October 2009 to attend an informal lunch to discuss the situation of the milk market and measures to respond to the crisis in the dairy sector.
The Ministers discussed the issue in view of the Council meeting of 19-20 October 2009 when the Commission planned to present a new market analysis and possible proposals.
The price of milk on the world market has dropped significantly since the peak in mid-2008 and the price that dairy farmers receive has thus taken a drastic drop, which means that many of these farmers are in a difficult economic situation.
At his arrival to the meeting, Eskil Erlandsson, Swedish Minister for Agriculture and President in office of the Council, explained that he would stick to the Health Check from November 2009 which said that the European Union should get rid of the quota system by 2015. SHOTLISTLINK
