Informal meeting of the Agriculture Ministers: extracts from the joint press conference by Eskil Erlandsson, Swedish Minister for Agriculture and President in office of the Council, and Mariann Fischer Boel
EU Agriculture Ministers gathered in Brussels on 5 October 2009 to attend an informal lunch to discuss the situation on the milk market and measures to respond to the crisis in the dairy sector.
At the end of the meeting, Mariann Fischer Boel, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Eskil Erlandsson, Swedish Minister for Agriculture and President in office of the Council, held a joint press conference.
Mariann Fischer Boel informed the Agriculture Ministers that a High Level Expert Group on Milk would begin work to discuss medium and long-term arrangements for the dairy sector given the expiry of milk quotas on 1 April 2015. She said that the work of this Group would be able to deliver concrete ideas on the future, but insisted on the fact that it would respect the outmost of the "Health Check". The Commissioner said that the Expert Group would study whether new arrangements should be put in place which could further contribute to stabilising the market and producers' incomes, reducing price volatility and enhancing market transparency.
