On 5 October 2009, Danuta Hübner, Member of the EP, Luc van den Brande, President of the Committee of the Regions, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, Maud Olofsson, Swedish Minister for Enterprise and Energy and President in office of the Council, and Patxi López, President of the Basque government, gave speeches, during the opening session of the European Parliament meeting, on the 7th annual 'Open Days' which celebrate the European Week of Cities and Regions.
The event offered more than 120 seminars, under the overall heading 'Global challenges, European responses'. It was organised around four themes: restoring growth, regions and climate change, territorial cooperation and evaluation and future prospects for EU Cohesion Policy.
Groupings of regions and cities organise events on shared interests, such as innovation or public health. In 2009, more than 250 event partners joined forces, among which 213 regions and cities from 33 European countries.
The aim of the event is to facilitate debate and networking among key players in regional and local development from the public, private and academic sector. In the space of just six years, the 'Open Days' have become a key event at which cities and regions have provided practical evidence of their capacity for creating growth and jobs, implementing EU cohesion policy in such a way as to achieve the best results.
