Extracts from the joint press conference by Jerzy Buzek, EP President, and José Manuel Barroso after the vote on the re-election of José Manuel Barroso at the Presidency of the EC by the EP
The European Parliament has approved on 16/09/2009, the appointment of José Manuel Barroso as President of the European Commission for a second term. He was elected by 382 votes in favour, 219 against and 117 abstentions, in a vote held by secret ballot. The approval required a simple majority of the votes, as the vote took place under the rules of the Nice Treaty. Abstentions did not count.
Jerzy Buzek, President of the EP, stated during the joint press conférence, that President Barroso could start to build on his detailed programme and construct his team of Commissioners. He welcomed his written political guidelines, which represented a new dawn for relations between Parliament and Commission.
As José Manuel Barroso stated that he will do his best to serve the European interest.
