Agriculture and Fisheries Council: extracts from the final joint press conference by Eskil Erlandsson, Swedish Minister for Agriculture and President in office of the Council, and Mariann Fischer Boel
The Agriculture and Fisheries Council met on 07/09/2009 in Brussels under the Presidency of Eskil Erlandsson, Swedish Minister for Agriculture and President in office of the Council. Mariann Fischer Boel, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Health, represented the Commission at the meeting.
The main point on the agenda has been the situation of the dairy market in 2009, after the demonstrations hold by the milk farmers during the last months. Sixteen Member states of the EU have presented a document, where they estimate that new regulations would be needed. On the Commission Communication based on the last Health Check of the System, several delegations don't agree on these new regulations, and consider that this would be a u-turn on the policy followed until now.
Other points on the agenda were the competitiveness of the Agro-Food Industry, the transport of live animals and the WTO timetable of negotiations. Eskil Erlandsson and Mariann Fischer Boel talked about all these points during the joint press conference. SHOTLIST
